Since the movie is coming out soon (OMGOMG!), I shall talk about the book first! I first read the book, or should I say skimmed through, when I was in High school. I soon gave up due to the exams (I even lost my first copy and needed to buy a new one, tch) and overwhelming workloads in my high school days until today when I finally kicked my lazy ass to re-read the whole book again. Unlike the first time I read it, it is surprisingly easier than I expected. Not sure who else read Lord of the Rings but I did and that series literally killed my sanity for its level of language. So I am kind of surprised to the relatively easy English used in the Hobbits. Well, definitely not complaining cause my brain is not ready for the level used in Lord of the Rings anymore. Then again, I finished Lord of the Rings when I was in High school… so I might find it easier now since my English was really bad last time… Anyway…!! To cut things short, this is a fairly easy and quick read, suitable for all ages!! Furthermore, Tolkien used a different approach to Hobbits than in Lord of the Rings. The narrator in the story sometimes interrupts the story flow. Let me quote a paragraph out from the book for you to see.
This is of course the way to talk to dragons, if you don’t want to reveal your proper name (which is wise), and don’t want to infuriate them by a flat refusal (which is also very wise). No dragon can resist the fascination of riddling talk and of wasting time trying to understand it. There was a lot here which Smaug did not understand at all (though I expect you do, since you know all about Bilbo’s adventures to which he was referring), but he thought he understood enough, and he chuckled in his wicked inside.
I certainly did not alter anything from the book. So yes, those words in the brackets do exist in the book itself! Haha, interesting heh!? I find it so amusing since it is also the way how I reply to my emails with my email-friends.. I would say I was subconsciously influenced by Tolkien since the time I first read the book. /smacked.
The middle one is definitely Bilbo Baggins. For heaven’s sake, I can’t differentiate Dwarves… so let’s just say they are Thorin, Balin, Fili and Kili. 8D
Thanks to Lord of the Rings, I can’t seem to get away from the perception that Bilbo is an old hobbit. Well, he is when it is in the epic trilogy but not in Hobbits since this is a journey revolves around Bilbo Baggins who was tricked to join a group of 14 Dwarves in their quest to claim back their treasures from a dragon, Smaug. (Damn, I love this dragon…! I can’t wait to watch the part where Bilbo actually converse with Smaug in riddles.)
O Smaug the Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities or O Smaug the Tremendous as what Bilbo called him trying to impress the dragon as he desperately tries to find an escape route
Oh yes, it is definitely worth noting that this book will highlight how Bilbo got the Ring. Well, it is already mentioned how he found it (briefly, I reckon?) in the third movie of Lord of the Rings. That’s how Bilbo impresses the Dwarves that he is not just an ordinary hobbit but one whom is worth respect of. Well, Gandalf recommended Bilbo to the group of 14 Dwarves and told the group not to underestimate what Bilbo can do. I certainly do remember Gandalf mentioned how impressed he is by the will and strength of a hobbit in Lord of the Rings as he says how these small insignificant creatures hold the key to stop the middle earth war and stop Sauran. I shall refrain myself from distracting myself to Lord of the Rings now. orzlll
So yes, having the invisible ring (as claimed by the Dwarves), Bilbo, as the hired burglar, often has to take the frontline. I would say luck is definitely on Bilbo’s side throughout the whole journey and he survived each crisis earning more respect from the dwarves when that happens.
As I am looking for photos, I discovered that this might be another Trilogy by Peter Jackson. OMG. Not unexpected since I can’t imagine how a 3 hour movie can adapt all those epic adventures. And to have a trilogy based on a century loved and well accepted book in all generations, you have to say this is going to be one epic trilogy.
Before this movie was officially announced, The Dark Knight Rises was the only movie I was looking forward to in 2012… but NOT ANYMOREEEE!!! This is THE one movie I have been waiting for for YEARS!
